Re-introduced into the Smokies in 2001, the elk are thriving. This series of photos shows Elk #800, who was born outside of the park but entered the park during rut, as he is fitted with tags and a radio collar on a foggy September morning. The radio collar allows park wildlife biologists to track his location and monitor the movement of elk outside of the park boundaries.
